How to Dress Your Baby for Sleep in Hot Weather: A Simple Summer Guide for Safer, More Comfortable Nights

When a heatwave hits, baby sleep can feel harder than ever. Warm, sticky nights often lead to more frequent waking, shorter naps, and unsettled bedtime routines.

The good news is that in most cases, small changes to how your baby is dressed and how their sleep space is set up can make a big difference.

Here is a simple, practical guide to dressing your baby for sleep in hot weather while keeping safety at the centre.

1. Start With the Room Temperature

Before thinking about clothing or sleeping bags, always check the actual room temperature using a reliable room thermometer.

This is key because babies cannot regulate their temperature in the same way adults can.

A simple rule to follow is:
It is safer for a baby to be slightly cool than too warm.

Overheating is a known risk factor in unsafe sleep environments, so temperature awareness matters more than guessing.

2. Keep the Room Cool, Not the Baby

It is natural to reach for a fan during hot nights, but placement matters.

  • Never point a fan directly at your baby
  • Instead, use it to circulate air in the room

To help keep the room cooler:

  • Open windows earlier in the morning when temperatures are lower
  • Close blinds or curtains during the hottest part of the day
  • Block direct sunlight in the afternoon where possible

These small steps help regulate the sleep environment without overheating or overcooling your baby.

3. Dress for the Temperature, Not the Season

One of the most common mistakes in hot weather is dressing babies as if it is still a cooler season.

A helpful general guide is:
One more light layer than you would wear comfortably in the room.

Use this as a rough guide only, and always adjust based on your baby and your home conditions.

Typical summer sleep clothing guide:

  • 18 to 21°C
Long sleeved vest + 1.0 tog sleeping bag
  • 21 to 24°C
Long sleeved vest + 0.5 tog
or short sleeved vest + 0.5 tog
  • 24°C+
Short sleeved vest + 0.5 tog
or 0.5 tog sleeping bag with nappy only
  • 26°C+
    Short sleeved vest + nappy
or just nappy if needed for comfort

Always follow the guidance on your specific sleeping bag and check your baby’s chest or back to ensure they feel comfortably warm, not hot or sweaty.

Safer Sleep in Hot Weather: What Else to Consider

Safe sleep principles still apply during warmer nights:

  • Always place your baby on their back to sleep
  • Keep their sleep space clear of loose bedding, pillows, or toys
  • Avoid overdressing or over-bundling
  • Monitor for signs of overheating such as sweating, flushed skin, or rapid breathing

If your baby is co-sleeping or bed sharing, it is especially important to be extra aware of temperature and bedding.

Bed sharing and heat

If you are bed sharing, overheating risk can increase due to shared body heat and bedding.

Safer sleep guidance recommends:

  • Keeping bedding light and minimal
  • Ensuring baby is not under heavy duvets or adult covers
  • Avoiding alcohol, smoking, or medications that affect awareness
  • Keeping baby on the outside of bedding, not between adults

For some families, warmer weather is a time when they choose to move baby back into their own sleep space temporarily to help manage temperature more safely.

By focusing on room temperature, safe cooling methods, and appropriate lightweight clothing, you can support your baby to sleep more comfortably and safely.

Most importantly, trust your instincts. You know your baby best, and small adjustments often make the biggest difference.
