September is the new January

There’s something about September that feels like a fresh start.

Forget January. September is when we suddenly feel the urge to organise the cupboards, buy new notebooks, get everyone into a routine and convince ourselves that this is the month we’re finally going to have our lives together.

After the freedom and unpredictability of summer, it’s no wonder parents start craving a little more routine, organisation and predictability.

And sleep is a huge part of that.

A fresh start for sleep

If your baby or toddler’s sleep has drifted over the summer, you’re not alone. Perhaps bedtime has crept later, naps have become inconsistent, or your toddler has decided that bedtime is no longer part of their plans.

September can be a lovely opportunity to gently reset.

Not because you’ve got anything wrong, and certainly not because your child needs a rigid schedule. Rather, because a familiar rhythm can feel reassuring for little ones and make family life feel more manageable for you too.

A predictable bedtime, a calming routine and a consistent sleep environment can provide those little anchors that help everyone settle back into a rhythm.

Maybe you’re returning to work

For some mums, September marks a huge transition. You might be returning to work after maternity leave, or your baby might be starting nursery.

Suddenly there are earlier mornings, nursery bags, commutes and a whole new routine to navigate. It can feel like a lot, particularly when you’re already thinking about how your little one will cope with the change.

You don’t need to have everything perfectly sorted before you return to work. Your child doesn’t need to be a perfect sleeper either. What can help is having a realistic routine that works for your family, with enough consistency for your little one to know what to expect.

Maybe you’re newly on maternity leave

Perhaps this September you’re at home with a tiny new baby, and your days currently feel like one long cycle of feeding, changing, cuddling and wondering when you might get some sleep yourself.

If that’s you, there’s no need to feel that you should be “getting back on track”. You have a newborn, and right now your priority is getting to know your baby and finding your feet together.

Instead, think about gentle anchors in your day. Fresh air in the morning, a calming evening routine and a familiar sleep environment can gradually bring a sense of rhythm without putting pressure on you or your baby.

Or perhaps your baby is still to come

If you’re pregnant and preparing to welcome your baby this autumn, September might feel like the beginning of an entirely new chapter.

Try not to put pressure on yourself to create a perfect sleep routine from day one. Newborns are unpredictable, and there is a huge amount of normal variation in baby sleep.

Think about rhythm rather than rigidity, and remember that you will learn your baby as they learn you.

A reset, not a reinvention

September doesn’t need to mean perfection.

It’s simply an opportunity to pause and ask, Is our current routine working for us?

If bedtime has become a struggle or everyone is feeling exhausted, start small. Reintroduce familiar bedtime cues, create some consistency around naps and bedtime, and give changes time to settle.

A routine should make life easier, not harder. It should give you something familiar to return to when teething, illness, nursery bugs and all the other unpredictability of life with little ones inevitably happen.

So, here’s to September: a new season, a fresh start and perhaps an opportunity for a little more rhythm, rest and predictability.

Because sometimes the fresh start we need isn’t January.

Sometimes, it’s September.
