Why Do Babies Wake at Night? 6 Common Causes and How to Reduce Night Wakes

Why Do Babies Wake at Night? (And What You Can Actually Do About It)

If you’re dealing with frequent night wakes, here’s the honest truth: there isn’t one single cause and there isn’t a quick fix.

That might not be what you want to hear when you’re exhausted, but it is what helps you actually solve the problem.

Night waking is normal

All babies wake during the night. Adults do too.

Sleep works in cycles, and every 1 to 2 hours we briefly come into lighter sleep. Most adults roll over and fall back asleep without noticing. Babies do the same, but if something has changed, that small stir can turn into a full wake-up.

So the goal isn’t to eliminate night waking completely. It’s to understand why your baby fully wakes and needs your help each time.

The real reasons your baby wakes at night

When I work with families, I don’t look for one issue. I look at the full picture.

Here are the most common causes of night wakes in babies and toddlers:

1. Overtiredness or undertiredness
Your baby’s sleep across 24 hours matters. Too much or too little daytime sleep can disrupt sleep hormones and lead to more night waking.

2. Strong sleep associations
If your baby is fed, rocked, or cuddled to sleep, they may rely on that same support when they wake between sleep cycles. When it’s not there, they fully wake and call for you.

3. Changes in the sleep environment
Temperature drops, noise, or light can all disturb sleep. Even small changes can cause your baby to wake more frequently.

4. Developmental milestones
Rolling, crawling, standing. These are exciting skills, but they often show up at night too. Your baby may wake just to practise.

5. Hunger
Some babies genuinely need feeds overnight, depending on their age and intake during the day.

6. Your response to night waking
It’s natural to respond quickly, but sometimes stepping back for a short moment gives your baby the chance to resettle independently.

The key thing most parents miss

If you’ve already tried adjusting naps, feeds, or bedtime and nothing has changed, this is usually why:

It’s not just about the schedule. It’s about how your baby falls asleep.

The way your baby falls asleep at bedtime is the same way they’ll expect to fall back asleep at 11pm, 2am, and 4am.

These aren’t bad habits. They’re learned sleep associations.

How to reduce night wakes

If you want to see fewer wake-ups, focus on the full picture:

  • Look at your baby’s total sleep across the day
  • Identify any strong sleep associations
  • Optimise the sleep environment
  • Consider developmental changes
  • Rule out hunger
  • Give your baby a chance to resettle before stepping in

You don’t need to change everything at once. In fact, you shouldn’t. Start with one area and build from there.

Night wakes aren’t random and they’re not your fault.

But they also won’t usually disappear by changing just one thing.

When you understand what’s really causing your baby to wake, you can start making changes that actually lead to longer stretches of sleep and more rest for everyone.

If you’re at the point where you feel exhausted and overwhelmed, getting the right support can make this feel a lot simpler and far less stressful.
