7 Simple Ways to Improve Your Baby or Toddler’s Sleep This Spring

With Spring well and truly here and the mix of rain, sunshine and the occasional cold snap, it’s the perfect time to reset your little one’s sleep environment and routines.

Seasonal changes can have a bigger impact on sleep than many parents expect. Lighter evenings, earlier sunrises and changing temperatures can all affect your child’s sleep. The good news is that a few simple adjustments can make a big difference.

Here are 7 practical baby and toddler sleep tips for Spring to help improve your baby or toddler’s sleep:

1. Block Out the Lighter Evenings and Earlier Sunrises

Longer days mean your child’s room may no longer feel as dark as it did in winter.

Why it matters: Light signals the brain that it’s time to wake up, which can lead to early rising and bedtime resistance.

Try this:

  • Use blackout blinds or curtains to keep the room dark
  • Check for light leaking around windows
  • Keep naps and bedtime in a consistently dark space

If early waking has already become a challenge, you can download my free Early Waking Guide here to help you get back on track.

2. Use White Noise to Mask Seasonal Sounds

Spring mornings often bring birdsong and outdoor noise, which can wake babies and toddlers earlier than usual.

Try this:

  • Use white noise for naps and overnight sleep
  • Keep the volume consistent throughout the night
  • Place the white noise closest to the external noise source (e.g. by the window)

3. Keep an Eye on Room Temperature

In the UK, Spring weather can vary a lot between day and night.

Try this:

  • Aim for a bedroom temperature between 16 and 20°C
  • Use a room thermometer to monitor changes
  • Adjust layers instead of overheating the room

4. Dress Your Baby for Spring

What your baby or toddler wears to bed plays a big role in how well they sleep.

Try this:

  • Use sleeping bags with appropriate tog ratings such as 2.5, 1.5 or 1 tog
  • If using a duvet, 4/4.5 tog is suitable
  • Adjust clothing layers underneath
  • Check your child’s chest or back to make sure they are comfortable

5. Support Sleep During Spring Colds and Sniffles

Spring often brings coughs, colds and allergies, which can disrupt sleep.

Try this:

  • Use a humidifier to ease dry or stuffy air
  • Keep your child hydrated
  • Stick to your usual bedtime routine for comfort and reassurance

6. Prepare Toddlers for Bedtime with Lighter Evenings

Lighter evenings can make it harder for toddlers to understand that bedtime is approaching.

Try this:

  • Use a “no surprises” approach by clearly signalling bedtime in advance
  • Introduce timers, songs or visual cues to support the wind-down
  • Keep your routine calm and consistent, even when it is still light outside

7. Keep Sleep Routines Consistent During Busier Spring Days

With more time outdoors, trips to the park and family activities, routines can easily shift.

Try this:

  • Stick to regular nap and bedtime times where possible
  • Plan stimulating activities earlier in the day
  • Use familiar bedtime cues like a bath and/or story to anchor sleep
