Worried About the Clock Change? Simple Ways to Adjust Your Baby’s Sleep

As the days become longer and brighter, families across the UK prepare for the March clock change. The clocks go forward by one hour, marking the start of British Summer Time.

While lighter evenings are a welcome change, the spring clock change can disrupt your baby’s sleep routine. Losing an hour often leads to unsettled naps and tricky bedtimes.

As a baby and infant sleep consultant at Mini Dreamers Sleep, I support families through sleep challenges like this every year. With the right approach, you can help your baby adjust smoothly and protect their sleep.

Why the Spring Clock Change Affects Baby Sleep

Babies and toddlers rely on consistent routines. Their internal body clock, also known as the circadian rhythm, is still developing and can be sensitive to time changes.

When the clocks go forward, your baby’s body is still running on the old time. This makes everything feel an hour earlier.

For example, a 7 pm bedtime will suddenly feel like 6 pm to your baby. This can lead to:

  • Difficulty settling at bedtime
  • Short naps
  • Increased fussiness

Understanding this helps you plan ahead and avoid unnecessary sleep disruptions.

How to Prepare for the Spring Clock Change

There are three simple ways to manage the transition. Choose the one that suits your baby and your schedule.

Gradual approach

Start adjusting your baby’s routine a few days before the clock change. Move bedtime, naps, and feeds earlier by 10 to 15 minutes every day or two.

This gentle shift helps your baby’s body clock adjust naturally.

Split approach

If you are short on time, move everything earlier by 30 minutes for two days before the clock change.

This is a quicker method that still supports a smoother transition.

Do nothing approach

Some babies adapt easily. If your baby is flexible, you can keep your routine the same and adjust after the clocks change.

This works well for laid-back sleepers.

Tips to Help Your Baby Adjust to the Clock Change

Adjust naps and feeding times

As you move bedtime earlier, shift naps and feeds earlier too.

Keeping everything aligned helps maintain a consistent routine.

Make the bedroom dark

Lighter evenings can make it harder for babies to fall asleep.

Use blackout blinds or curtains to create a calm, dark sleep environment. This helps signal that it is time for sleep, even when it is still light outside.

Keep your bedtime routine consistent

A predictable bedtime routine is key for good sleep.

Stick to your usual steps such as bath, pyjamas, feed, story, and bed. Familiar cues help your baby feel secure and ready for sleep.

Watch your baby’s sleep cues

Your baby may become tired earlier during this transition.

Look out for signs like rubbing eyes, pinkish eyebrows, fussiness, or losing interest in play or zoning out. Responding to these cues can help that pre-bedtime craziness!

Be patient

It can take a few days to a week for your baby to adjust to the new time.

Stay consistent and give your baby time to settle into the new routine.

What to Expect After the Clock Change

After the clocks go forward, you may notice:

  • Slightly earlier bedtimes
  • Temporary nap changes
  • Some evening fussiness

These are normal and usually settle within a few days.
