Starting Nursery or Preschool? How It Can Affect Your Child’s Sleep

Starting Nursery or Preschool and Sleep: What Parents Need to Know

Starting nursery or preschool is a huge change for your little one, and even if they are excited and settling well, all the new people, routines, noise, learning and stimulation can have an impact on sleep.

You may notice shorter naps, more night waking, earlier mornings, bedtime becoming harder or your child suddenly seeming much more tired than usual. This is very common during a big transition and doesn’t necessarily mean their sleep has gone backwards.

Why can nursery affect sleep?

A nursery or preschool day can be exhausting, even when your child has had a lovely time. They are busy learning, playing, socialising and adapting to a completely different environment, while also being away from you for longer periods.

Some children sleep less at nursery because there is simply too much going on, while others may sleep more because they are tired from the change. You may also notice that they need more connection when they come home, with extra cuddles, attention or support at bedtime.

This is often their way of decompressing after a busy day.

Your routine may need to change

One of the biggest mistakes I see when children start nursery or preschool is trying to keep exactly the same routine they had before. Their days have changed, so it’s completely normal for your routine to need some flexibility too.

Bedtime

If your child has had a short nap or no nap at nursery, they may need an earlier bedtime, particularly during those first few weeks.

Don’t be afraid to bring bedtime forward when they are clearly exhausted. You may also find they need a little more time with you before bed, so allow space for cuddles, stories and some calm one-to-one time after a busy day.

Morning routine

Mornings can suddenly become much more rushed when you have to get everyone dressed, fed and out of the door, so keeping the order of your morning predictable can help your child know what to expect.

If they are regularly very difficult to wake, slow to get going or struggling with mornings, it is worth looking at whether they are getting enough sleep overnight rather than simply trying to fit more into the morning.

What if they are exhausted after nursery?

If your child has had a poor nap or has stopped napping at nursery but clearly isn’t ready to make it all the way to bedtime, a bridging nap can sometimes help.

For younger children, this might be a short nap on the way home or once you get home. For older toddlers and preschoolers who no longer nap, some quiet time after nursery can give them a chance to slow down before dinner and bedtime.

It doesn’t have to be sleep. Books, cuddles, colouring or calm play can all give them an opportunity to decompress after a busy day.

Remember that this is a big adjustment

Starting nursery or preschool can affect sleep for a little while, but it doesn’t mean you need to completely overhaul your child’s sleep or start again from scratch.

Instead, look at what they need on each day. If they have slept poorly at nursery, an earlier bedtime might be the answer. If they are exhausted after several busy days, a short bridging nap or quiet time could help. If they are asking for more cuddles and connection, make space for that too.

The goal isn’t to force your old routine to fit a completely new stage. It’s about making small adjustments while your child gets used to their new routine.

And remember, starting nursery is a big transition for you too. If sleep becomes a little messy for a while, you haven’t done anything wrong. With time, consistency and a little flexibility, most children find their rhythm again.
