If your day keeps starting before sunrise and you’re already exhausted by breakfast, you are not alone. Early morning waking in babies is one of the most common sleep struggles parents face, leaving many feeling drained, overwhelmed, and unsure what to try next.
Please know this: you are not doing anything wrong. Early wakes are common and often very fixable with the right approach.
What Is an Early Wake?
Most families hope for a wake-up time between 6:00 and 7:00 am. If your baby is waking before 6:00 am and ready to start the day, this is typically considered an early wake.
Although it feels like a nighttime issue, early waking is usually linked to daytime sleep, routines, and your baby’s body clock.
Common Reasons Your Baby Wakes Early
Understanding the cause is the first step toward longer, more restful mornings.
Overtiredness
Short naps or long wake windows can lead to overtiredness. This raises stress hormones and often causes early morning waking.
Too Much Day Sleep
If your baby naps too long during the day, they may not have enough sleep pressure to sleep later in the morning.
Bedtime Timing
A bedtime that is too early can shift your baby’s internal clock forward, leading to early rising.
Circadian Rhythm Development
As babies grow, their body clock matures. This can temporarily favour early waking.
Hunger or Growth Spurts
Growth, development, or calorie needs can cause babies to wake early, especially in the first year.
Light and Environment
Morning light, noise, or temperature changes can signal that it is time to wake.
Light and Environment
If you feed as soon as they wake, it kick-starts metabolism and signals to the body that the day has begun, which can encourage the same early waking pattern to repeat.
The same is true for exposure to bright light, lively play, screens, or lots of stimulation. Keeping the environment calm, dim, and low-key until your desired wake time can help shift your baby’s internal clock and support later mornings.
If your little one is fed upon waking in the morning, they will often wake at the same time.
Why Early Wakes Feel So Hard
Broken sleep affects everything. Your energy, mood, patience, and confidence can suffer when your day begins too early.
Many parents say early wakes feel harder than night wakings because the day must begin, even when you are exhausted.
If you feel worn down, your exhaustion is valid and you deserve support.
Gentle Changes Can Improve Early Waking
Early waking in babies and toddlers often improves with small adjustments to sleep timing, nap balance, sleep environment, and routines.
The key is knowing what to adjust and when.
