Baby and Toddler Sleep on Bonfire Night: How to Keep Calm Through the Crackles

Bonfire Night, also known as Firework Night or Guy Fawkes Night, is a time filled with vibrant fireworks, crackling bonfires, and cheerful gatherings. While it’s a magical time for many families, it can be quite the challenge for parents of babies and infants. Loud noises, bright lights, and disrupted routines can spell trouble for even the best of little sleepers. But with a bit of preparation, you can help ensure your baby stays calm and sleeps well during this festive time.

As a baby and infant sleep consultant @minidreamerssleep, I’ve gathered some key strategies to help parents navigate Bonfire Night without sacrificing precious sleep.

1. Plan Ahead

Bonfire Night (and the nights before and after) can be unpredictable, especially with spontaneous firework displays starting early and continuing late into the night. Begin by planning your baby’s routine in advance, factoring in potential disruptions. If you know fireworks will start at a certain time, try shifting your baby’s bedtime a little earlier that evening to help them fall asleep before the loud bangs start.

2. White Noise for the Win

White noise is a sleep-saving tool for babies, particularly during noisy occasions like Bonfire Night. A white noise machine or app can help mask the sound of fireworks, creating a soothing environment for your baby. Set it to a volume that is just a bit louder than the external noises, but still safe for your baby’s sensitive ears. This constant background sound can help them feel secure and less startled by sudden, loud bursts.

3. Create a Cosy Sleep Space

Ensure your baby’s sleep environment feels extra comforting and safe. Close curtains or use blackout blinds to block out the bright flashes of light from fireworks. A darker, calming room can help reduce stimulation and encourage sleep.

4. Stick to a Soothing Bedtime Routine

Even when Bonfire Night is in full swing, it’s important to stick to a consistent bedtime routine, if possible. Familiar, calming activities like a warm bath and a bedtime story can signal to your baby that it’s time for sleep, no matter what’s happening outside. The predictability of the routine can help soothe any anxiety your baby might feel from the unfamiliar noises and lights.

5. Be Mindful of Overstimulation

If your family loves Bonfire Night and plans to be out and about, be mindful of your baby’s limits. Bright lights, loud bangs, and large crowds can easily overstimulate babies and lead to meltdowns or difficulty settling later. If you do bring your baby along to a bonfire event, consider using baby ear defenders to protect their hearing and reduce the intensity of the noise.  If you’re out and about, dress your little one in their PJs before you travel home incase they drop off on the way home – that way they can be transferred straight into their sleep space.

6. Comfort Your Baby When Needed

Despite your best efforts, some babies may still wake up or become unsettled by the noise. If this happens, try to remain calm and offer gentle comfort. Begin by offering verbal comfort and then offer physical comfort if they don’t settle. Resist the temptation to over-stimulate with too much interaction – sometimes a simple, soft reassurance is all they need to drift back to sleep.

7. Prepare for a Disrupted Night

Even if you take every precaution, there’s always the chance that Bonfire Night will disrupt your baby’s sleep. Be prepared for a little bit of unpredictability. Keep calm and remember that this is a one-off event, and any sleep setbacks are temporary. If your baby’s sleep is impacted, focus on getting back into a consistent routine the following night. Babies are remarkably adaptable, and they’ll fall back into their regular sleep habits with a little time and patience.

Final Thoughts:

Bonfire Night is a fun and exciting time, but it can feel stressful when you’re trying to protect your baby’s precious sleep. By planning ahead, creating a calm environment, and being mindful of their needs, you can help your little one sail through Firework Night with minimal disruption. Remember, you’ve got the tools to help your baby feel safe, secure, and cosy, even through the bangs and crackles outside.

Happy Bonfire Night! Stay safe and enjoy the celebrations.
