It’s the end of January, and if you’re feeling exhausted, frustrated, or like your New Year’s resolutions for better sleep have already fallen by the wayside, you are not alone. The start of the year often comes with hope and plans, but life with a baby does not pause for resolutions. Night wakings, unpredictable naps, and bedtime battles can leave even the most organised parents feeling defeated.
The good news is that it’s never too late to hit reset. Even if the first few weeks of the year did not go as planned, gentle, consistent changes can help your baby, and you, get the sleep you are desperate for.
Rebuild a Calming, Predictable Bedtime Routine
Babies thrive on consistency, but it’s easy to let routines slide when life gets busy. Now is the perfect time to gently reintroduce a predictable bedtime routine. A warm bath, a cosy cuddle with a short story or lullaby, dimmed lights, and a few minutes of quiet cuddles or gentle massage can signal to your baby that it’s time to sleep. Even 15 to 30 minutes each night can make a noticeable difference. With repetition, your baby will start recognising these cues and settling more easily, bringing calm back to your evenings.
Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment
If nights feel chaotic, the right environment can help your baby settle faster and stay asleep longer. Blackout curtains prevent early morning wakings, a comfortable room temperature between 16 and 20°C keeps your baby cosy, and gentle white noise can mask household sounds. Ensuring the cot is clear and the mattress firm creates a safe and calming space. Keeping these elements consistent between naps and bedtime gives your baby the reassurance they need to rest more easily.
Tune Into Sleepy Cues
Babies can’t tell us when they’re tired, but they give plenty of signs. If you act too late, settling becomes stressful and frustrating. Look for rubbing of the eyes or ears, sudden clinginess, yawning, or a drop in alertness. Putting your baby down when you notice these signs can make bedtime calmer and more predictable.
Balance Daytime Sleep and Activity
Daytime naps and activity levels have a big impact on night-time sleep. Ensuring your baby has a good mix of active play and restful periods helps create better sleep overall. Crawling, tummy time, and gentle movement during awake periods help expend energy, while quiet transitions like reading or cuddling before naps signal that rest is coming. A balanced day of stimulation and calm sets the stage for a more predictable night.
For older babies and toddlers, ensuring they are taking an age appropriate number of naps and at the right times of day, helps make bedtime smoother and long wakes less likely.
Respond Gently to Night Wakings
Night wakings are completely normal, but how you respond matters. Pause for a moment when your baby wakes – they may be able to resettle on their own. If they need your support, keep interactions calm and quiet, avoiding bright lights or stimulating play. Gentle pats, soft shushing, or holding their hand can reassure without fully waking them. Responding this way helps your baby feel secure and teaches that night wakings are temporary.
It’s Not Too Late to Reset
If January hasn’t gone to plan, don’t worry. Small, consistent changes now can transform sleep before February begins. By focusing on routines, creating a sleep-friendly environment, and tuning into your baby’s cues, you can help your little one feel safe and secure while giving yourself the rest you desperately need.
Here’s to calmer nights, more predictable naps, and a brighter start to the year for both you and your baby.
