Back to Basics: Essential Baby Sleep Tips

Everyone seems to have their own ‘expert’ advice on getting your baby to sleep, but sometimes it’s best to stick to the basics. Let’s explore the fundamental principles for setting your baby up for a good night’s sleep.

Safer Sleep

Safety should always be the top priority. Key guidelines include always placing your baby on their back to sleep and ensuring the crib is free from toys, pillows, bumpers, and other items. If you choose to co-sleep, thoroughly research safe co-sleeping practices. The Lullaby Trust offers extensive information on safe sleep practices.

Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment

A few simple changes to your baby’s sleep environment can make a significant difference. From day one, I recommend using a blackout blind. Keeping the room as dark as possible helps signal to your baby that it’s nighttime. This is crucial for children of all ages. Newborns often have their days and nights mixed up, sleeping more during the day when mom is active and moving. For older babies and toddlers, a dark room promotes melatonin production (the ‘sleep hormone’) and can help prevent early morning wake-ups.

Distinguish Between Day and Night Feeds

To help your baby learn the difference between day and night, vary the environment during feedings. During the day, feed your baby in a well-lit room with plenty of activity and noise. At night, keep the room dimly lit and minimise stimulation. The goal is for your baby to associate nighttime feedings with a calm, boring environment that encourages them to go back to sleep.

Prioritise Sleep

It’s okay to focus on improving your baby’s sleep if it’s taken a step back. Sleep is essential for a baby’s growth and development, so don’t hesitate to make it a priority. This doesn’t mean you have to stay home all the time, but consider adjusting your schedule to ensure your baby gets adequate rest. If your baby is cranky or waking frequently at night, it might be time to evaluate their daytime routine. Aim for 2-3 days each week where your baby gets all their naps in their crib at the right times. This creates a stable baseline that allows for flexibility on busier days.

Establish a Routine

A consistent routine is crucial for many reasons. It helps your child know what to expect next, providing comfort and security. For toddlers, routines set boundaries and reduce pushback. Informing your toddler of upcoming activities, like bath time in 10 minutes, helps them prepare mentally. A routine also adds structure to your day, making it easier to manage multiple small children. Ensure your baby gets the right amount of food and sleep by following a predictable schedule. Follow Your Baby’s Cues

While guides and expert advice are helpful, every baby is unique with different sleep needs. Pay attention to your baby’s cues and habits. If they seem tired, they might need a nap or an earlier bedtime. Conversely, if they resist naps or it’s affecting bedtime, they might need shorter or fewer naps. Trust your instincts and adjust accordingly.

By focusing on these basic principles, you can create a safe, nurturing sleep environment for your baby, setting the stage for healthier sleep patterns.
